Don't be disturbed
when you find the currency sign "$" on lot's of places. This
stands for the Chilean currency "Peso". The exchange rate is
very variable between 600-700 Pesos/USD and between 700-750 Pesos/EURO.
Using US dollar in cash is easy. EURO gets more and more known. Most banks
and exchange offices in Chile accept traveller cheques, but the rate is
often very bad, compared to the cash.
Credit cards like Visa,
MasterCard, Diners and American Express are accepted without problems in
towns and cities. ATM's are situated as well in supermarkets, as in
banks. Be aware that you cannot pay with credit card in the back
country. Best to have Pesos, when you travel by bus or want to stay at
backpacker's places.
We accept creditcards at our office in Puerto Varas and at the Riverside Lodge. |
