All of Chile's forests are temperate, not tropical. Earth's few
remaining temperate rainforests are truly ancient forests-in terms of
the average age of its trees - Chile's trees and groves are the oldest
of them all.
Chile's "Bosque Valdiviano" may be Earth's most extensive pristine
temperate rainforest, within which are recesses never known to be
visited by humans. The age of the trees of the rainforest make the
Chilean "cold jungle" one of the most successful biomes ever studied.
Learn more about the most species diverse rainforest on our 6 km "Nature
Trail" up in the mountains at La Junta, situated in the Cochamo Valley.
In this forest of Cochamo are still ancient groves of the giant Alerce /Fitzroya
Cypressoides which are about 3000 years old. This native forest merits
protection and preservation in its present wild state. When riding up to
La Junta and walking our "Nature Trail" you will get to know this
ecosystem.
To get a complete sense for the ambience of the rainforest environment
one should take their time and immerse themselves in the forest by
utilizing your senses-touch, smell, hearing, as well as sight. Taste as
well is a fantastic way to know the forest, but we recommend that one
try only the edible plants described in our guide you receive while
walking the trail and take advantage of the fresh Andean water by taking
a bath in the different pools of the stream and the river.
"Anyone who hasn't been in the Chilean forests doesn't know this planet..."
by Pablo Neruda
We should help to protect this unique nature and keep it alive for the
following generations. |
